Boys soccer: Uni shuts out Normal Calvary Baptist, ends losing streak

URBANA — The boys varsity soccer team defeated visiting Normal Calvary Baptist 5-0 Tuesday, ending a five-game losing streak that began Sept. 20 with a 7-1 loss to Class AA Champaign Central.

Sophomore Dan Lilly sparked the Illineks with two goals and one assist. He leads the team in scoring with nine goals on the season. Senior Jake Seeley and juniors Holden Bucher and Carter Hutchens each added a goal.

Senior goalkeeper Isaac Radnitzer shut out the visitors as he recorded five saves, three in the first half. On offense, Uni put plenty of pressure on the Crusaders, delivering 20 shots on goal, 10 in each half.

VARSITY GAME
AT A GLANCE

  • Score: Uni 5, Normal Calvary Baptist 0
  • Uni record: 9-8-1,
    3-1 ECIC
  • Recap: The host Illineks ended their five-game losing streak to get back over .500 with one game left in the regular season.
  • Next game: Monticello at the DCR Soccer Complex, 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11

The win was Uni's first since a 4-0 victory over Decatur Lutheran on Sept. 18.

"Hopefully this game was a good confidence 'rebuilder' after our five-game losing stretch," Uni head coach Philip Anders said. "We still have some key players out with injuries, but other players, such as Alex Zhai, Neil Pearson, and Julian Hartman, stepped up and played a fabulous game."

The scoring began 8 minutes into the contest as Lilly connected on an assist by Zhai, a senior. Five minutes later, Hutchens scored on a penalty kick for his third goal of the year.

Seven minutes into the second half, Seeley got things rolling again with a kick that went over the Normal Calvary goalkeeper's head, his sixth goal of the season. Lilly assisted on that play.

Seeley returned the favor 15 minutes later, setting up Lilly for his second score of the game. Then with 9 minutes left, Seeley assisted on his second score of the contest as Bucher netted his sixth goal of the year. Seeley leads the team in assists with 10.

The final regular-season contest for the Illineks will take place Thursday when Monticello visits the DCR Soccer Complex in Urbana.

As they head into the postseason, which begins Friday, the Illineks are seeded No. 2 in their Class A sectional, which Monticello will host.

Judah Christian, a 5-0 victor over Uni earlier this season, is seeded No. 1 in the 15-team bracket.

Class A is organized into eight sectionals around the state. The winner of each bracket will go on to play in the state tournament Oct. 26 and 27 at North Central College in Naperville.

Uni lost to Warrensburg-Latham 2-1 in last year's Monticello sectional title game. (The Cardinals are seeded No. 2 in the Rochester sectional this year.)

According to the IHSA postseason schedule, the Illineks will host 15th-seeded Mt. Carmel in the first round of the playoffs on Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at DCR Field No. 9.

If Uni wins that game, the team would play again on Tuesday against the winner of the Saturday Catlin Salt Fork (No. 10) vs. Monticello (No. 7) match.

In junior varsity action, the Uni JV participated in the Monticello Tournament on Monday, going 0-2. The team lost to St. Thomas More 3-0 in its first match and 5-3 to Judah Christian in its second.

In the Judah game, Noel Knox scored two goals and Jasper Maniates-Selvin one. Maniates-Selvin assisted on Knox's first goal; Loic Hostetter assisted on the other. Eric Fritzsche assisted on Maniates-Selvin's goal.

"The JV team played very well in both games, maybe a little tired playing back-to-back games in the second half of the Judah game, which we led at halftime 2-1," Anders said. "In both games, we controlled possession of the ball against teams with a good collection of varsity players. Two of St. Thomas' players had scored four of the seven goals against our varsity last week!"
