CHAMPAIGN — Uni defeated Bismarck-Henning in a two-round chess match Thursday night at Parkland College.
The varsity team consists of junior Gordon Ruan (1), senior Alex Zhai (2), senior Geoffrey Beck (3), junior Alan Liang (4), junior Greg Atherton (5), and sophomore Daniel Cheng (6).
In Round 1, Uni won with a score of 58-0, although Bismarck-Henning was able to put up some resistance on Board 4. Liang played an intense game where both sides had chances, going down to the last five minutes on his clock. Nonetheless, Liang was able to take advantage of his opponent's inaccuracies late into the game and secured Uni's first-round sweep.
Bismarck-Henning improved in Round 2, gaining a large advantage on Board 6 against Cheng off an overlooked pin. But despite the setback, Cheng slowly recovered and ended up winning. However, Bismarck-Henning's fourth board made a comeback from a weak position to avoid a shutout in the 49-9 Uni victory.
In the individual junior varsity matches, junior Brian Wang, sophomore Danny Ge, sophomore Daniel Wilson, and freshman Youyang Gu each won their two matches.
Uni is now 3-0 in the East Central Illinois Chess League and will play its next match on Nov. 8 against Notre Dame de LaSalette at Parkland College.
