Beauties and geeks

Every week that I can be home at 7 on a Tuesday, I turn on the TV to the CW and watch "Beauty and the Geek." Yes, it's a bit superficial, but I am totally addicted to this show. The point is to get a group of completely gorgeous women to pair off with socially stunted brainiacs. They're supposed to develop into better people by the beauties talking to "geeks" and getting smarter, and the geeks gaining confidence in their social skills.

This year the "experiment has evolved," and there is a male beauty and a female geek. This is a bit of an interesting change, one which I thought the show should have immediately regretted as the male beauty started hooking up with one of the other beauties. There are a lot of exceptions for these particular partners, and I think that takes away from the show.

Now, the male beauty's "girlfriend" has been sent home and he has far overstayed whatever welcome he had. I think he should be sent home now, because he is changing the show too much, and my fellow staff reporter Lauren Piester agrees with me. She is addicted to the show too.

By far my favorite episode of every season is when the geeks get a makeover. All of the geeks get new hair cuts/colors, wardrobes, and in extreme cases waxing. All of a sudden, they're happier and more confident around the beauties, and no matter how superficial it is, the beauties really open up to them more and everyone starts having a better time. Plus the geeks look amazing and the transformation is so shocking that you can barely recognize them.

To be honest, no matter how much I like this show — and to be honest with myself I will keep watching — it is with a measure of sadness that I note that my favorite beauty just got kicked off. Her name was Erin, and she was pretty but not in a "wears-a-lot-of-makeup" way. Of all the beauties, I think she came the farthest in her transformation. By her last episode, where they went to a comic convention, she was asking the geeks questions and asking herself why she hadn't known about this world all her life.

Really, no matter how superficial you think this show is, I love it. And by the end, the people really do change. And I know I'll be watching next week.
