Ghosts and ghouls. Overflowing garbage bags of candy. Annoying people ringing your doorbell every five minutes. Ah yes, it’s Halloween time again.

For me, Halloween has always been a day where I could count on skipping homework and running around with my friends while feeling ridiculous because I was always the only one who didn’t have a ridiculous costume.

But in recent years, Halloween hasn’t been different from any other day of the year. Apart from the massive amounts of candy that I steal from my younger siblings, I still spend my Oct. 31 doing homework and other things.

Maybe I’m crazy. Whatever it is, Halloween just isn’t the same anymore. I find myself wanting less and less to go out there and “trick-or-treat.” Now, I don’t go unless my friends beg me to go with them; which they don’t.

One thing that may have ruined my Halloween is that my parents decided to buy candy a few weeks ahead of time. What were they thinking? I went through several bags of candy, and now I really don’t think I can eat very much more.

But Halloween isn’t all about the candy. Apparently, Halloween started as an Irish holiday that celebrates the end of the fertile period of the Celtic goddess Eiseria. The worlds of the living and the dead are said to overlap when this happens.

Back when I still went trick-or-treating for Halloween, I was never curious about its history. But now, I’m tired of candy and I’m turning Halloween into a learning experience. I guess I’m all grown up.
