Halfway to winter break

Tags:

Time always seems to go by quickly. As usual, it’s been a busy two months for Uni students — with everyone obsessed with homework and whatnot, so I was somewhat surprised when I looked at my calendar and saw that October is giving way to November. What exactly does this time of year mean?

It means the baseball season is over (why do New Englanders get everything?), and the NBA season is just beginning.

It means we've survived one-fourth of this marathon school year — until our grades come this week, that is.

It means Halloween, with costume contests in Uni Gym, trick-or-treating for selfish or selfless reasons, and fatter wallets for anyone who owns a candy company.

It means radiators clanking loudly, and complaints about either the artificial heat or the natural cold.

It means nostalgia for apple cider, pumpkins, and the days of roaming Curtis Orchard as an innocent preschooler.

It means squirrels frantically collecting nuts, and multicolored fallen leaves being raked into piles seemingly begging to be scattered with a running jump.

In a way it’s sad. After Halloween, there aren't many warm days ahead. Temperatures will drop into the 50s and the 40s, but that’s still too warm for frosty magic snow. Days will get shorter, school will get harder, and only Thanksgiving break will provide any relief in the near future. Classes will get smaller as more students suffer from the flu. But not all hope is lost.

After all, before you know it, it'll be winter break.
