Cleaning freaks me out

I hate cleaning my room. Actually, I really hate cleaning my room.

I'm fine with cleaning anything else, but when it comes to my room, I will try to put it off for as long as I can.

However, room cleaning is like homework: the more you procrastinate, the worse the situation becomes.

I really have no idea why cleaning my room is such a daunting task. Maybe it's because the mess is completely my fault, whereas in other areas of my house, the messiness is a combined effort of everyone in my family. Or maybe it's because however clean my room gets, it just goes back to its original state in a few days. Whatever the reason is, this task just freaks me out.

This summer I went on a massive cleaning spree in my room. While the first day was fun since I found all these entertaining items from elementary school, I couldn't bring myself to continue the second day. As I got out of bed the morning of the second day, the state of my room disgusted me. So I quickly fled, and I didn't come back until the next day. (I slept in the guest bedroom that night.)

I couldn't bring myself to continue until maybe a week later. Now, just a few months later, my room is basically as messy as it was before I went on my summer cleaning. The only difference is that I have empty drawers and shelves to organize my mess. But, if I fill these spaces with stuff, they will become their own new mess. So, it's just easier keeping them empty.

Fortunately, messiness is a stereotype of teenagers. When I tell my friends I'm cleaning my room and not suceeding, I get sympathetic responses and remarks on how their own room is a huge mess. I never tell adults of my defeat from fear of disapproval.

I hope that someday I will learn how to overcome this great "challenge" in my life, but it's not really a great concern of mine. I'm sure my mom is terrified that I'm going to be a slob when I grow up, but there are so many worse things that I could be.

So even though there is a huge mess awaiting my acknowledgement, I think I'm going to go do my math homework instead.
