Winter and the holidays
Published: Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 10:32pm
Winter is finally approaching. The weather is colder, the days are shorter, and Thanksgiving is only two weeks away, and it's all a bit depressing.
Especially with the coming of the end of daylights savings, days seem so much shorter. While it is nice and helpful to wake up to the sun coming in through your windows, it's not very inspiring to watch the sun set on your way home from school. In a few weeks, however, we won't even have that sun to wake us up in the mornings.
Coming home to darkness is not helpful either. I mean sure, it is a pain to have to turn on your lights as soon as you enter the door, but the darkness especially affects my work ethic. I just find it so much harder to start my homework when it's already dark outside. Just the act of doing homework seems so much easier when it's light outside.
It seems that everything about winter is so much more stressful.
But then I'm totally ignoring what many think is the best time of the year: the holiday season.
Driving at night is made better by all the Christmas lights and decorations, which can be quite impressive at times. Holiday carols are heard everywhere, forcing you to get into good holiday spirit and cheer. And, you have to admit, people seem to be so much more generous around this time of year.
Malls are packed. Store windows are decorated with pictures of snow, snowmen, reindeer, and Santa Claus. Even though it never seems to snow here until after Christmas, you still have hopes for a white Christmas. Everyone appears to be happy, which, I must admit, is very nice.
Unfortunately, though, the holidays only last so long . After the holidays there are still three more months of winter, which is the longest, and most unbearable, part of the year for me.
But then again, I really shouldn't complain. I should just be thankful I don't live in Scandinavia or Russia.
