History magazine runs essays by subfreshmen

Posted Thursday, March 30, 2006, The OG, student awards

Four of English teacher Steve Rayburn's subfreshman students have had their work published in the April 2006 issue of Illinois History: A Magazine for Young People.

The four essays were among 17 chosen from submissions statewide for the issue. The theme was “Businesses in Illinois History.”

The research papers were selected as part of this year's Illinois Historical Preservation Agency Illinois Author contest. The authors will now be considered for selection as Illinois Junior or Senior Historian of the year by IHPA.

The subfreshmen and their winning essays were:

• Tej Chajed, “Wolfram Research: Mathematica”
• Maritza Mestre, “Sara Lee Bakery Group”
• Brittany Scheid, “Tower Hobbies”
• Sophia Otto Shenk, “The Courier Café”
