DELAND — DeLand-Weldon entered Friday night's conference matchup against Uni averaging just 21.5 points per game.

By halftime the host Eagles had already exceeded that average, trailing the Illineks by the relatively close score of 37-25.

But those would be the home team's only points of the night as Uni held the Eagles scoreless in the second half to win 70-25.

"It was kind of funny because in the first half we were playing such bad defense that Beez [Uni head coach Joel Beesley] didn't even come into the locker room," recalled senior Mike Renner. "We just said, 'It's not happening this half,' and took it to 'em."

It was the second time this season that DeLand-Weldon failed to score in a half. Against Decatur Christian on Dec. 18, the Eagles didn't get on the board until the third quarter as they were outscored 46-0 in the first half and lost 73-13.

Uni's record improves to 11-5 overall, 3-1 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

Renner led the Illineks with a game-high 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Austin Rundus added 17; his 3 treys topped all scorers. Senior Isaac Radnitzer finished with a game-high 11 rebounds, followed by Renner with 7 boards.

Chumar Williams dished out 5 assists. Both the senior point guard and Renner had 3 steals.

Senior Josh Taylor led the Eagles with 14 points, including 2 treys.

As a team, the Illineks dominated the boards with 40 rebounds. They repeatedly denied the Eagles scoring opportunities with 13 steals and 5 blocked shots (all blocks by Renner).

By the Gargoyle's count, Renner has 1,329 career points, just 43 points away from tying older brother Al Renner as Uni's all-time boys basketball career-scoring leader. Al graduated in 2006 with 1,372 points. Mike already holds the Uni career record for 3-pointers.

The Illineks return to the court tonight at Fisher in a nonconference game. The JV will tip off at 6 p.m., with varsity action to follow.

In Friday's JV game, Uni defeated DeLand-Weldon 47-16.
