This year's Super Bowl is hyped just enough

Sports fan or not, there’s an event on Sunday that you’re guaranteed to hear about for weeks to come — the Super Bowl.
Aside from everything to do with the election, the Super Bowl is the biggest event of the year in this country. Yesterday’s media day alone drew thousands of journalists (but I had to go to class). The game is always surrounded by tons of hype, and this year that hype is justified.
A month and a day ago, this year’s participants — the Patriots and the Giants — squared off in a game that had no impact on the playoff picture, but ended up being one of the best — if not the best — games of the season.
The Patriots had their perfect season at stake, and the Giants had only their pride. New York came out and played arguably their best game of the season, but couldn’t dethrone the Perfect Pats in a 38-35 loss.
Both quarterbacks are two of the more intriguing ones in the league. Tom Brady is often surrounded by more paparazzi than there are lockers in Uni. The league MVP set a new NFL record for touchdowns in a season (50), and is trying to win his fourth ring in seven years.
Eli Manning is the second Manning in two years to play in the Super Bowl. His older brother Peyton won it last year with the Colts, and Eli has shown in the last four weeks that he is capable of doing the same.
But I’d watch the game even without a bunch of trendy storylines to follow. Last year I was spoiled since my two favorite teams — the Colts and the Bears — played for the title. Yet Sunday’s contest is much more than just a game — it’s the biggest event in sports on the year.
Unlike baseball, basketball, or hockey, one bad day cannot be forgiven. Each team has only one shot to keep its season going, not a half dozen or so. That makes the drama of the game much more intense, and that’s why the game consistently draws about half the country to a TV set.
Count me among those people who will be watching.
Prediction: Patriots 27-22
