Girls basketball: Lady Lions too much for Illineks

URBANA — A 21-point halftime lead by Decatur Lutheran proved too much for the Illineks to overcome, as the Lady Lions defeated Uni 66-40 Jan. 18 at Kenney Gym.
At the time, Uni’s record fell to 9-11 overall, 6-2 in the ECIC. The Illineks ended their regular season 12-12 overall, 9-3 in the conference. LSA’s record improved to 18-3 overall, and 9-0 in the ECIC.
Junior Rachel Skoza led Uni with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Seniors Aran Yoo, Sarah Pfander, and Ruthie Welch added 9, 6, and 6 points, respectively. Pfander added 7 rebounds, and Yoo made the team’s only three-pointer.
LSA jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter, and had a commanding 38-17 halftime lead. Uni narrowed the deficit to 51-31 after the third quarter, but LSA put down any shot at a fourth quarter comeback.
In that night’s JV action, the Uni JV defeated the LSA JV 30-21.
Uni will play Georgetown-Ridge Farm tomorrow in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A playoffs. The game begins at 6 p.m. at St. Thomas More.
The game was scheduled to be played last night at St. Thomas More, but the game was moved to Wednesday because of heavy fog.
This is the first year that the IHSA has divided schools into four classes for girls basketball. A single class was used through 1979. The division of schools into small (Class A) and large (Class AA) lasted from 1980 to 2007.
Uni is seeded ninth in the 11-team Sub-Sectional B of the Bloomington Central Catholic bracket. Georgetown-Ridge Farm is seeded seventh.
The two teams played earlier this season when the Lady Buffs defeated Uni 51-29 at the McDonald's Comet Classic on Nov. 20.
If the Illineks win tomorrow, they will play second-seeded Monticello on Thursday. That game would begin at 6 p.m., also at St. Thomas More.
