ST. JOSEPH — Senior Chumar Williams made nine treys Friday night to stay alive in the IHSA Class 2A Three-Point Showdown.
Williams and sophomore Dan Lilly made it past the first round on Tuesday prior to the Uni vs. Monticello regional semifinal game. They competed again Friday before the Monticello vs. St. Joseph-Ogden regional title match.
Williams advanced along with Dustin Billings of Westville, Blaize Cumbow of St. Joseph-Ogden, and Jacob Gooch of Westville.
The foursome will compete Tuesday prior to the 7:30 p.m. sectional semifinal game between Monticello and Olney East Richland at Casey-Westfield High School.
They will be joined by four qualifiers from the Newton regional: Silas Gabel of Cumberland, Keith Kermicle of Olney, Scott Mammoser of Newton, and Charlie McDowell of Olney.
The top four finishers will advance to the sectional championship shootout Friday at Casey-Westfield. The top four shooters in that competition will advance to the state prelims the following week at Carver Arena in Peoria.
Williams is hoping to duplicate on the boys side the accomplishment of junior Jessi Sullivan, who advanced to the girls Class 2A state prelims. It was the second straight year that Sullivan made it to state in the Three-Point Showdown.
But as was the case in 2007, Sullivan did not make it past the prelims this year, finishing with five treys Thursday at Illinois State University's Redbird Arena.
