NORMAL — The Uni girls soccer team dominated the action Saturday afternoon against Normal Calvary Baptist Academy (CBA), but after 50 minutes of play the score was still 0-0.

But then Michelle Wong, taking a pass from fellow sophomore Erika Belmont at the top of the penalty area, beat both her defender and the CBA goalkeeper for the game's only score. It was Wong's third goal of the season, tying her with senior Aran Yoo as the team's scoring leader.

The East Central Illinois Conference win raises Uni's record to 4-1-1 overall, 1-0 in the ECIC. The host Crusaders dropped to 2-2, 2-1.

Despite the low score, the Illineks were firmly in control for virtually the entire contest, as most of the action took place in the CBA half of the field.

After Uni outshot the Crusaders 12-0 in the first half, coach Phil Anders moved Sarah Pfander from goalkeeper to midfielder so she could have more of an impact on the contest. The senior responded by contributing four shots on goal.

By game's end, Uni had outshot CBA 21-3. The closest the Crusaders came to scoring was in the second half, when they had opportunities resulting from two corner kicks. Junior Lor Sligar made all three saves for the Illineks.

Next up: Uni will host Decatur St. Teresa 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the DCR Soccer Complex, Florida and Lincoln avenues, Urbana.

The game will be a good test of how the Illineks might fare in the postseason, since St. Teresa is one of 10 teams in Uni's Class A sectional bracket.

So far, the Illineks have played two teams in their bracket, defeating St. Thomas More 3-2 and tying Monticello 0-0.
