MACON — Junior Joy Shapley scored a pair of goals Saturday, including one on a penalty kick, as the Uni girls defeated Macon Meridian 4-0 in a nonconference road game.
The victory was the Illineks' fifth straight, dating back to their 3-1 upset of Class AA Charleston on April 8. It was also their fourth consecutive shutout. With senior keeper Sarah Pfander leading the way, Uni has given up only six goals in nine games.
Uni is now 7-1-1 overall, 2-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference.
The game, which began at 10 a.m., made up for the April 10 contest that was canceled due to rain. As Uni head coach Phil Anders put it, the match began "with both teams looking as if they were still getting the sleep out of their eyes for the first few minutes."
But by the fifth minute, Uni's passing game got on track.
"A methodical buildup and a quick attack from right forward Erika Belmont had the ball played across the front of the goal to an onrushing Joy Shapley, who made quick work of the chance," Anders said. "Six minutes later, Joy returned the favor with a beautiful cross from the left wing to Erika, who easily found the back of the net."
The goal was Belmont's fifth of the season, temporarily tying her with sophomore Michelle Wong for the team lead.
Leading 2-0, Uni went into halftime firmly in control of the game. The visiting Illineks outshot the Hawks 9-0.
"Any hint of an attack by Macon was quickly taken care of by a solid Uni defense consisting of Jessica Sullivan, Annie Machesky, Chelsea Freeland, and first-time starter Sian Best," Anders said.
Uni put the game away early in the second half. In the 41st minute, sophomore Michelle Wong — "supported by a Uni team that seemed to be everywhere on the field," Anders said — took the ball near the top of the penalty box.
"In a brilliant solo display of skill, she sidestepped the defender and released a shot that was just out of reach for the Macon goalkeeper," Anders said.
The unassisted goal was Wong's team-leading sixth of the year.
Uni remained ahead 3-0 until the 79th minute, when Shapley attacked the Hawks' penalty area, just as Wong did at the start of the half. Shapley found herself between two defenders.
"In a skillful showing of footwork, she played the ball between the defenders and could only be stopped by a foul from one of the defending players," Anders said.
Shapley connected on the resulting penalty kick, giving her four goals on the season.
Once again, Pfander had little to do as goalkeeper, and she moved to the field to see more action. Junior Sheri Grill replaced her and made two saves in the second half to maintain the shutout.
The Illineks outshot their hosts 10-2 in the final 40 minutes, 19-2 for the game.
This year's match represented a big change from last season, when Uni and Meridian remained scoreless until the 66th minute. Pfander scored that game's only goal on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
The Illineks now begin a brutal stretch against top competition that won't end until early May. They will face two Class AA teams this week: Mahomet-Seymour (seeded No. 1 in its subsectional bracket) on Tuesday and an impressive Mattoon squad on Thursday. Uni will then square off Saturday against a fired-up St. Thomas More team ready for payback after losing to the Illineks 3-2 on March 27.
The following week Uni will play Class AA Danville on April 29 and Warrensburg-Latham — the No. 2 seed in Uni's sectional (the Illineks are No. 4) — on May 1.
