URBANA — Sophomore Michelle Wong and senior Suran Yoo each scored a goal in the first half to lead Uni to a 2-1 upset over visiting Warrensburg-Latham.

Wong's goal came 30 minutes into the contest on an assist by senior Shara Esbenshade.

In the final minute of the half, Yoo scored what turned out to be the winning goal; junior Joy Shapley assisted on the play.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Pfander wasn't tested much as Uni controlled possession and held the Cardinals to one shot on goal in the first half and three in the second.

Pfander's biggest challenge came in the 55th minute. The Cardinals were awarded a penalty kick, but Pfander stopped Valerie Sobol's shot.

Warrensburg-Latham averted a shutout in the 72nd minute but couldn't mount a strong enough attack in the remaining eight minutes to even the score.

Uni outshot the Cardinals 15-4, including 9-1 in the first half.

The nonconference victory raises Uni's record to 8-4-2 overall (2-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference). The Illineks had lost three of their previous four matches, tying a fourth. All three losses were to Class AA schools (Mahomet-Seymour, Mattoon, and Danville).

Warrensburg-Latham entered Thursday's game as the No. 2 seed in the Class A Williamsville sectional; Uni was No. 4.

In JV action, the Cardinals defeated Uni 2-1. Revathi Maturi scored the lone Illinek goal. The freshman connected on an assist from senior Larissa Pittenger seven minutes into the game to give Uni a 1-0 lead. The goal was Maturi's second of the season. She leads the JV in assists with six.

With the loss, the Uni JV record is 2-5-4 overall (no conference JV games have been played).

The Illineks will be back in action 10 a.m. Saturday when they host conference opponent Judah Christian in a varsity-only match. The game will be the final regular-season home contest for Uni's 10 seniors.
