URBANA — All four senior captains, plus junior winger Joy Shapley and sophomore striker Erika Belmont, found the back of the net in Uni’s 7-0 rout Saturday of conference foe Judah Christian on the girls’ Senior Morning.

Though the opposition posed little in the way of a challenge for the girls, the soccer players of the Class of 2008 and their teammates won their last home game of the regular season emphatically and with style.

With the victory, the Illineks are 9-4-2 overall and 3-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

Two Uni captains, striker Suran Yoo and stopper Zoë Schein, each struck once in the first 10 minutes, both goals assisted by senior Jessica Stark. Schein's goal was her first ever as an Illinek.

Judah keeper Mallory Clark, however, frustrated the dominating Illineks by recording 15 saves in the first half and foiling all Uni attempts to extend their lead.

Her Uni counterpart, Sarah Pfander, saw virtually no action, and junior goalkeeper Sheri Grill came into the contest after the Illineks went up by two goals. As senior Chelsea Freeland explained, coach Phil Anders let the captains be in charge of the game, including substitutions, and Pfander left as a preplanned agreement.

Pfander subsequently reappeared on the field in her natural attacking midfield slot. Star midfielder Michelle Wong, consequently, did not get a good deal of playing time, but Pfander’s controlling performance in Wong’s usual position kept the Uni offense running smoothly.

The second half unleashed a barrage of goals, of both the scrappy and aesthetically pleasing varieties, upon the visiting Tribe.

Right-winger Shara Esbenshade’s clever one-two with Yoo in the 43rd minute resulted in a pristine ball from the striker, which Esbenshade calmly volleyed into the side of the net in an absolutely gorgeous display of technical skill between two of Uni’s finest attacking players of the last four years.

Shapley set up forward Belmont for a confident, routine finish in the 61st minute and found the back of the net herself three minutes later with a fine tap-in from Esbenshade’s perfectly weighted cross.

Stopper Schein matched Esbenshade’s goal for stunning precision and beauty when she lined up for a 75th-minute free-kick after Yoo was brought down outside the box. As predicted by semi-professional soccer analysts Kumars Salehi and Jake Seeley, Schein’s deadly accurate right foot and immense confidence on the day proved an insurmountable obstacle for the Tribe’s Clark, who could only watch as the perfectly placed free kick curved its way into the top left corner of the Judah goal.

A last-gasp goal from senior captain Chelsea Freeland, revelatory both on defense and offense in her left-back role this season, finished the scoring in the final minute with a characteristically resilient goal-bound effort low into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Yoo was the architect, as she has been so often this season, but the recent renaissance of her goal-scoring form has allowed her to shine with a confidence that epitomized the girls’ star turns on the day.

Esbenshade’s second half of the season has been truly impeccable, and her array of flicks and turns infused the team with a verve and vitality that it will surely need in its challenge for a successful postseason.

Schein, even without the irrepressible tenacity of freshman defensive midfielder Amanda Hwu in front of her, proved her immense value to the team in all situations by leading a defense that prevented the Tribe from achieving a single shot on goal as well as recording an impressive double.

Schein’s ecstasy at finding the back of the net for the first time in her Uni career was palpable and inspiring, as was Freeland’s when she scored her first goal of the season in the game’s final minute.

Judah may be the weakest side the Uni girls have played so far, but it was the style and technical flair with which the Illineks thrashed the Tribe that provides the most hope for the postseason.

Uni will travel to Decatur on Monday to take on the Decatur Lutheran School Association in a match that will determine the ECIC championship. It will also provide another measure of where Uni stands as it gets ready to enter the Class A sectionals. LSA is seeded No. 3 in Uni's playoff bracket, while the Illineks are No. 4.
