Girls soccer: Danville shuts out Illineks

Posted Wednesday, May 3, 2006, The OG, sports

Uni's scoring woes continued on Tuesday as Danville defeated the host Illineks 3-0.

The loss was Uni's third straight shutout and dropped the team's varsity record to 3-12.

Danville netted its first goal about eight-and-a-half minutes into the first half, scoring off a free kick that bounced off the goal post. Junior goalie Mandy Grill continued her strong play, keeping Uni in the game with 10 saves before halftime. The Illneks had four shots on goal.

In the second half, the Lady Vikings added two more goals. Grill came up big with 11 saves, but Uni managed only two shots on goal.

The girls will host Warrensburg-Latham on Thursday for senior night in their last home game of the season. Varsity action begins at 4:30 p.m. Visit the team's home page for a complete schedule of 2006 games.

The Cardinals are the No. 1 seed in Uni's Class A sectional. The girls will compete in the Decatur St. Teresa bracket, where they will face Decatur Lutheran on May 16 at 4 p.m.

If the Illineks win that game, two days later they would face the winner of the May 15 Judah Christian-Decatur St. Teresa match.
