Senior Katie Carmody has been named to the 21st annual Chicago Tribune Illinois High School All-State Academic Team.
Carmody is among just 10 seniors selected for the honor. The team members will each receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Chicago Tribune Foundation and will be profiled in Sunday's edition of the Tribune.
All Illinois high schools are eligible to nominate one candidate for the team. The 10 overall finalists, as well as additional regional finalists, are chosen by a panel of educators, parents, and college admissions officers.
The team members often feature well-rounded activities and credentials beyond straight A's and stellar SAT and ACT scores. Carmody earned a perfect score on the SAT last year and was named a Presidential Scholar semifinalist this year, but her position on the Uni baseball team also piqued the Tribune's interest. The paper sent a photographer to a game last week at Uni's home field in Rantoul after notifying Carmody of the award.
Carmody is the third Uni student this decade to be chosen for the All-State Team. Valerie Ross made the cut in 2004, and Meera Sekar received the honor in 2001.
