Student Council executive elections will take place Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the kitchen. All subfreshmen through juniors are eligible to vote for candidates for the three executive offices: president, vice president, and secretary/treasurer.
People will be in the kitchen ready to take your votes. They will require you to check yourself off a list, and then they will give you a ballot to fill out. Results should be counted later in the afternoon.
The candidates for StudCo executive secretary/treasurer are juniors Martin Granick and Benjamin Schaap. They provided Student Council with brief bios. In addition, The Online Gargoyle asked each candidate to respond to several questions. Here are the results. (The OG will post previews of the vice presidential candidates later tonight.)
Candidate bios
MARTIN GRANICK
If being qualified for a position as executive secretary/treasurer could be personified in the ability to score touchdowns, I could be easily mistaken for Terrell Owens. For the past two years, I have been helping the class of ‘07 as secretary/treasurer. This position — especially this year — was crucial for knowing specific details for prom and class activities that required money. The experience that is necessary for being an executive officer was gained from me going to Student Council every week to see how the present and past exec officers handled meetings. Although the role of secretary/treasurer is to send out prompt weekly minutes and knowing money issues, the secretary/treasurer also has to work with the exec president and vice president to help and satisfy the student body, and the school as a whole. Could I not do this and more? There are two possible answers, and by two, I mean one. That answer certainly is yes.
BENJAMIN SCHAAP
I am running for secretary/treasurer. I believe that I am the best candidate because I am organized and responsible. The secretary/treasurer's office takes a lot of dedication, and I will execute with dignity and respect. I hope that you vote for me.
Questions for the candidates
REASONS FOR RUNNING:
• Martin Granick: So I can be part of the school. Help the school out.
• Benjamin Schaap: To make UNI a better place, and to be involved.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:
• Martin Granick: Sophomore-junior secretary/treasurer.
• Benjamin Schaap: Not in StudCo.
I WOULD MAKE A GOOD EXECUTIVE SECRETARY/TREASURER BECAUSE:
• Martin Granick: I know most people in the school and talk to most of them. I can voice their opinions. Uniquely, I resemble Terrell Owens. I also have the tried and true characteristics that include motivation, dedication, responsibility, and more.
• Benjamin Schaap: Because I am responsible and organized.
THINGS I'D DO DIFFERENTLY FROM THOSE IN THE PAST:
• Martin Granick: [The past secretary/treasurers] were great, but I'd maybe format a new way of writing minutes that is even clearer.
• Benjamin Schaap: More involvement.
THINGS I'D DO DIFFERENTLY FROM MY OPPONENT:
• Martin Granick: Walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
• Benjamin Schaap: I would carefully consider the budget and projects.
THINGS I WOULD DO:
• Martin Granick: Work with the president and vice president more. Possibly more all-school functions that include something other than movie nights.
• Benjamin Schaap: I would like to attend the meetings and involve myself with the inner workings on StudCo.
THINGS I WON'T DO:
• Martin Granick: Run in the hallways unsupervised.
• Benjamin Schaap: Late minutes.
A STATEMENT TO THE COMPETITION:
• Martin Granick: Hi, I'm Martin.
• Benjamin Schaap: Good luck.
