GILMAN — Winning by the same margin of victory achieved last year, the Uni boys varsity soccer team defeated the Iroquois West Raiders today 7-1 in a road game. The win further improves the team's already all-time best start to 10-0.
The Illineks netted five of their goals in the first half. Senior Michael Belmont scored Uni's first three goals, raising his team-leading total to 16. Juniors MIke Renner and Julian Hartman added one goal apiece in the first half, and seniors Martin Granick and Jeremy Pillow each scored in the second half.
With less than 10 minutes before halftime, the Raiders scored their single goal after one player battled his way through the Illineks' defense and kicked a through ball that a teammate quickly converted into a shot.
Junior Isaac Radnitzer and Renner served as goalies for the first and second halves, respectively.
It was the fifth consecutive year the Illineks defeated Iroquois West. Last year, Uni beat the Raiders 8-2. The team has outscored its opponents this season 56-8.
The Illineks return to DCR fields to face Decatur Lutheran Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
