After a day of suspense, the boys varsity soccer team knows who its opponent will be in Monday's sectional championship game at Monticello High School — and it's a team the 17-3-1 Illineks are familiar with.
Warrensburg-Latham edged Bloomington Central Catholic this afternoon 1-0 in the second Monticello sectional semifinal game. Uni defeated St. Thomas More 6-2 Thursday in the other semifinal. (Click here for our story of Uni's win and here for photo coverage.)
Almost a month ago, Warrensburg-Latham handed Uni its first loss of the season. The host Cardinals beat Uni 2-0 on Sept. 25, initiating a four-game winless streak for the Illineks. Going into that game, Uni was 12-0 and coming off the high of upsetting Class AA Champaign Central.
Uni is the No. 1 seed in the Monticello sectional. Warrensburg-Latham is seeded No. 2.
The winner of Monday's game, which starts at 3 p.m., will advance to the eight-team IHSA Class A state tournament at North Central College in Naperville. The tournament will begin Friday with quarterfinal matches at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m.
According to Athletic Director Sally Walker, no Uni “ball team” (soccer, volleyball, basketball) has made it to an IHSA state tournament. Monday's game will be the first sectional title match that a Uni soccer team, boys or girls, has competed in.
At least one fan bus will leave Uni at 2:20 p.m. Monday. All Uni students (except subbies) will be allowed to go to the game as long as they provide a signed permission slip and the IHSA $5 admission fee.
Check back this weekend for a more extensive preview of Monday's game.
