Freshmen, sophomores to have a lock-in of their own

BACK IN November, freshmen and sophomores probably felt left out when United for Uganda sponsored a lock-in for juniors and seniors.

Not to worry. Uni's underclassmen will get their own lock-in a few weeks after winter break, thanks again to UFU, a student club dedicated to spreading awareness about and raising money for the “invisible children” of northern Uganda — children who had been abducted and forced to fight in that country's 18-year-long civil war.

The freshman/sophomore lock-in will be held during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, from 9 p.m. Jan. 13 to 8 a.m. Jan. 14. Tickets will cost $20, the same fee charged for the junior/senior lock-in held Nov. 11-12.

As with the November event, this one will feature a variety of activities for students to keep themselves busy through the night, such as (but not limited to) a scavenger hunt, an eating contest, movies, video games, and board games.

The junior/senior lock-in succeeded in raising $1,050, according to UFU organizers. Senior Mandy Grill, one of the UFU leaders, said the group had always planned to sponsor a freshman/sophomore lock-in. However, it was necessary to organize separate events because there would have been too many people stuffed together otherwise.

Grill said she hopes the January lock-in will have an even better showing than its predecessor, when 68 juniors and seniors were present.

All of the profit will go to the Uganda Children of War Rehabilitation Project, which supports a rehabilitation center in Gulu, Uganda, for former child soldiers. The center provides the “invisible children” with psychological counseling, medical care, and the opportunity to reunite with their families.

“[We want to make] as much as we can,” said Grill.

The two lock-ins won't be UFU's only big fund-raisers of the year. As the Gargoyle reported last week, the group will sponsor a Mr. Uni pageant and all-school talent show in late March. Auditions for the pageant and talent show will be held in Room 206 from 4 to 5 p.m. today and during lunch Tuesday.
