TO THE SOUND of The Band's classic song “The Weight,” 59 seniors entered the Krannert Center's Tryon Festival Theatre at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2, for Uni High's 2007 commencement ceremony. The two-hour event featured a student welcome address by Jacquelin Hedeman and a farewell by class president Devin Johnson. The graduation choir, led by fine arts executive teacher Rick Murphy, provided a musical interlude. English teacher Steve Rayburn gave the commencement speech, while history teacher Bill Sutton delivered the benediction. Rebecca Lynn Weisel Wachtel, a 1967 Uni graduate, received the Max Beberman Distinguished Alumni Award. The highlight of the afternoon, of course, was the presentation of the diplomas, accompanied by a rose for each graduate. As the clock approached 5 p.m., the Class of 2007 began life after Uni to the tune of King Harvest's “Dancin' in the Moonlight.” In this audio slideshow, members of next year's graduating class recreate the big afternoon.
