THE UNI CHESS team went into the 2007 IHSA state tournament Friday seeded third. Although Uni finished the two-day competition in eighth place, the team had plenty to be proud of. This weekend marked only the third time that Uni has placed in the top 10 since the IHSA eliminated the Class A small-school division in 1995. Last year's fourth-place finish was Uni's highest in the single-class system. In 1996, the school placed eighth as well. (Uni won six Class A state titles between 1978 and 1994.) Also impressive was the showing of Alan Liang on sixth board; the sophomore finished second in the state. With most of the players returning next year, a third straight top 10 finish seems a realistic prospect.
