Video: Dancing in the street with the Uni High Cultural Fair

WITH MORE THAN 30 booths offering knowledge and culinary delights, this year's Uni High Cultural Fair was a huge success. Held on Friday, Oct. 12, the fair lasted two hours and drew hundreds of participants — not just Uni students and faculty, but parents, members of the University of Illinois community, and local residents who wanted to share insights into their own cultures.

For many, the highlight of the fair came when West African dancer Djibril Camara coaxed scores of fairgoers onto a closed-off Stoughton Street and led them to the rhythms of African drumming performed by members of the U of I Center for African Studies' Mara-Giri Drum & Dance Project.

Another highlight was a demonstration of capoeira, the Brazilian martial arts dance, by members of the U of I's Cordao de Ouro Capoeira Club.

Gargoyle staffers Lauren Piester and Sindha Agha documented the fair for this Gargoyle video, with help from technical editor Isaac Chambers. Check it out and relive the sights and sounds that made the fair such a memorable event.
