ON JAN. 6, CHAMPAIGN'S new $28.3 million main public library opened for business at 200 W. Green St., right behind the building it replaced.

With 122,600 square feet of space, the new library is three times the size of the old building, according to library director Marsha Grove.

Designed by Ross Barney Architects Inc. of Chicago, it's not just a beautiful, modern new structure. Some of its more interesting additions include:

  • a large, enclosed quiet study room and multiple group study rooms
  • a drive-up book return
  • a children's program room
  • a unique teen section, complete with computers and comfortable seats
  • a Latte Da! café and patio
  • more than 430 places to sit in lounge chairs or at study tables
  • more than 120 public computers
  • five public meeting rooms
  • an easy-to-use self-checkout system
  • a Wii

Whether they come for research or amusement, visitors are sure to find what they want in the new library. For a closer look at what it has to offer, take a look at the slideshow.

Nice piece!

Very nice introduction to the new library. I'm curious to know what you thought of the teen space. Do "teens" even like having a "teen space"?
