Latin students triumph on national exam

Twenty-nine of Krisanna Lucken's students earned honors on the 2006 National Latin Exam, which is co-sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. Last year about 148,000 students in the United States and in more than a dozen other countries took the NLE.

The 45-minute, 40-question exams were administered during the second full week of March (March 13-17). The exams, which are tailored to multiple levels of proficiency (from Intro to Latin to Latin V & VI) included questions on grammar, comprehension, mythology, history, and derivatives.

Students who won gold medals and summa cum laude certificates as top scorers:
• Katherine Allen (Latin I)
• Jasper Maniates-Selvin (Latin I)
• Kelly Mover (Latin I)
• Gordon Ruan (Latin II)
• Geoffrey Beck (Latin III)
• Ethan Berl (Latin III)
• Daniel McNamara (Latin III)
• Alex Zhai (Latin III)

Students who won silver medals and maxima cum laude certificates as second-place winners:
• Sindha Agha (Latin I)
• Tej Chajed (Latin I)
• Jared Doyle (Latin I)
• Linda Ly (Latin I)
• Arnav Pamidighantam (Latin I)
• Daniel Pearlstein (Latin I)
• Daniel Wilson (Latin I)
• Jasmine Alvarado (Latin II)
• Elaine Gu (Latin II)
• Nishant Nookala (Latin II)
• TJ Bozada (Latin III)

Students who earned magna cum laude certificates as third-place winners:
• Eric Fritzsche (Latin I)
• Nora Peterson (Latin I)
• Terry Qi (Latin I)
• Brittany Scheid (Latin I)
• Jason He (Latin II)
• Alan Liang (Latin II)
• Charlie Wan (Latin II)
• Aliisa Rantanen (Latin III)

Students who earned cum laude certificates as fourth-place winners:
• Rachel Harmon (Latin I)
• Maritza Mestre (Latin I)

In addition, five students scored high enough on a separate test to qualify to take the prestigious Illinois State Latin Exam on April 29.
