Three subbie writers stand out in fiction contest
Posted Thursday, April 20, 2006, The OG, student awards
Three subfreshmen have won honorable mention awards for their entries in the March story contest sponsored by Cricket magazine.
As their topic, students could write anything about dinosaurs. Their limit was 350 words. All three Uni students chose to concentrate on comic aspects of the topic, said English teacher Rosemary Laughlin.
Nora Peterson wrote “Tommy's Dilemma,” about a vegetarian dinosaur who brings his new friend, a meat-eating Tyrannosaurus rex, home for lunch and worries what T. rex will think of veggies.
Sindha Agha wrote “Transformation,” about a student empowered in public speaking by imagining herself a T. rex.
Dan Lilly wrote “Time Machine and a Dinosaur Egg,” whose title suggests the save-the-day device that made his a winning story.
Cricket is a literary magazine for 9- to 14-year-olds, with an international subscription of 120,000. It rotates monthly contests for stories, art, and poetry. The students' names will be printed in the June issue.
