The Uni High Activism Club and the Sexual Health Awareness Group will sponsor a free movie night on Saturday as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The groups will show “Searching for Angela Shelton,” a 2004 documentary that follows one woman's cross-country search for other people who share her name in an effort to survey women in a creative and interesting way.

The majority of the women Angela finds were abused at some point in their lives. The movie evolves from a simple survey into a mission of self-exploration. The film is brought to a close after Angela's confrontation with her father, who had abused her and her stepsiblings when she was a child.

The 93-minute movie will be shown at 7 p.m. in the North Attic. Doors will open at 6:30. Due to the content and theme, permission slips will be required for students under 18. Students may turn
permission slips into the SHAG box at school, or bring them on Saturday night. You can get a permission slip by e-mailing senior Annie Fehrenbacher at fehrenba@uni.uiuc.edu or by downloading a printable PDF here.

“SHAG had been wanting to have a movie night for a while and we'd been considering several movies to show, but we fnally decided on this one,” Fehrenbacher said. “We chose it partially in light of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, but also because it is so eye-opening. The film shows just how widespread the problem of sexual abuse is and how it can happen to anyone — to people of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds.”

Following the movie there will be a brief discussion about the topics covered in the film. All students are encouraged to attend and to bring anyone they think might be interested.
