Two subfreshmen win Gold regional writing awards
Posted Thursday, April 20, 2006, The OG, student awards
Each year the best student artists and writers in the country compete to reach the final round of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
This year two Uni subfreshmen have won Gold awards for their stories in the regional level of the competition: Sindha Agha and Vivian Robison.
Only 800 entries out of 5,000 advanced from the regional affiliate in which Agha and Robison competed. Some 90 regional affiliates send a total of 30,000 entries to the national level for judging, where they may receive gold, silver, or honorable mention status, or nothing at all.
Agha's “Remembering the Velveteen Rabbit” (a reflection on family life in a favorite vacation spot) was named in the short story category. Robison's “Star Bleck” (a satire on “Star Trek”) was named in the humor category.
Last year Jacob Druker, now a Uni freshman, won a Gold Award at the national level in the science fiction/fantasy category for his story “20/20.”
About 250,000 students compete in the Scholastic contest annually. Only 1,100 receive national awards.
