Grand event: Senior auction raises more than $1,000

The day began with things looking glum for X-Week's goal of collecting $2,000 for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Only $35 had been raised after four days. But then the senior auction kicked in. The annual event was held in Uni Gym during lunch and raised more than $1,100. English teacher Steve Rayburn presided as auctioneer/MC. Items sold included a dinner for eight cooked by Spanish teacher Jenna Finch ($110), an “OC” viewing party at senior Colette DeJong's home ($70), a date with Alyssa Digges and Al Johnson ($45), Roveiza Irfan's physics notes ($40), a date with Al Renner and Daniel Jacobs ($30), chain mail courtesy of Lucas Ecker ($30), a comic book from math teacher Gene Bild ($25), and a signed practice jersey from Cameron Cropek ($25). The leftover items (about a dozen) will be sold via silent auction in the next week. Also during lunch, the junior class raffled off pies as its fund-raiser. By the end of the day, things were looking much better for X-Week. Besides the success of the auction, the first night of Big Show was a sellout!
