THE YEAR'S first “Breakfast with the Principal” will take place Thursday from 7 to 7:55 a.m. in the Uni kitchen. Breakfast with the Principal serves as a forum in which students can freely express their ideas and concerns to Director/Principal Kassie Patton.

Patton started the tradition last year, hosting the event six times. This year Patton would like to host the event three or four times.

Typically, Patton starts out by asking the attending students a question. In the first Breakfast with the Principal, she asked for their opinions on the idea of an honor council, receiving a mostly negative response. (This fall, students voted overwhelmingly in favor of pursuing an honor council.)

The discussions have covered topics such as homework, more early dismissal days, teachers, classes, and the extent of freedom at Uni.

Patton says these sessions help give her a “general idea about the kinds of things Uni students are thinking about.” They also give her an opportunity to talk with the students. While no specific changes have ever come as a result of Breakfast with the Principal, it does offer a great opportunity for students to voice any concerns that they have.

There are many students who regularly attend Breakfast with the Principal, and Patton estimates that the student turnout is often between 80 and 100 students.

A variety of foods have been served at Breakfast with the Principal, ranging from a hearty, full breakfast with eggs to culinary selections from McDonald's. While she prefers to keep the food choices a surprise, Patton says she does her best to select food that students are sure to enjoy.

On Dec. 21, “Breakfast with the Principal: The Grown-Up Version” will be held for teachers to voice their thoughts.
