SPIRIT WEEK 2007 began on Monday, and it seems like people were ready for a little fun. Plenty of folks donned the appropriate color for Pink Day, then changed into royal blue or orange for the girls basketball game later that night.

Mandy Grill and Bianca Zaharescu, the only seniors on the girls team, walked off the Kenney Gym court winners in their final home game as the Illineks beat Decatur Christian 47-40 in an exciting contest that raised Uni's record to 12-11 overall and 8-3 in the East Central Illinois Conference. The boys varsity will play Decatur Christian tonight at Kenney Gym. There's no JV game, so the action begins at 6 p.m. All students who wear orange or royal blue (not navy) will get in free.

Here's the schedule for the week:

— Monday: Pink Day (see photos below)

— Tuesday: Twin Day

— Wednesday: School Colors Day

— Thursday: Pajama Day

— Friday: Hippie Day

On Wednesday, a Spirit Week assembly will be held at Kenney Gym from 3:09 to 3:50 p.m., featuring a faculty volleyball game. For the bell schedule that day, click here.

“Spirit Week is about school spirit and a chance to get pumped up about athletic events,” said senior class secretary treasurer Rohun Palekar. “I'm pretty excited about Pajama Day.”

The last word goes to Student Council secretary/treasurer Martin Granick, who said in the recent StudCo minutes: “We moved Hippie Day from Thursday to Friday to give everyone an extra day to not shower. Take advantage of it.”

Look for more photos as Spirit Week continues.
