College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program honors three Uni students

[Note: This article was updated on Nov. 16 to reflect an official change in Michelle Mehnert's status from honorable mention to scholar.]

THE COLLEGE BOARD has chosen three Uni seniors as honorees in its National Hispanic Recognition Program.

Thomas Bozada, Erin Hayes, and Michelle Mehnert have been named Scholars in the program.

According to the College Board, since 1983 the National Hispanic Recognition Program has identified outstanding Hispanic high school students and shared information about them with subscribing colleges and universities.

To be eligible, students must be at least one-quarter Hispanic and must designate themselves as Hispanic on the PSAT.

Bozada, Hayes, and Mehnert were among the top 4,000 Hispanic students honored this year from a pool of 196,000, according to Uni college counselor Lisa Micele.

The honorees will not receive a monetary award, but the program will distribute a CD-Rom listing all Scholars and Honorable Mention finalists to subscribing institutions.

"Being listed on this CD-Rom may give students an opportunity to hear directly from colleges that are interested in communicating with prospective students of Hispanic heritage," the College Board says on its Web site.

Last year, Tony Costa of the Class of 2007 was named an Honorable Mention Finalist in the program.
