YOU MIGHT WANT to plan your morning commute to school a little better, because construction is beginning on the corner of Springfield and Mathews avenues.
According to Assistant Principal Sue Kovacs, when the construction is completed, Springfield will be restricted so that there will only be room for two lanes, to eliminate passing. The exact plans of the project are unclear, but at the moment the curb is being extended to allow pedestrians to see the traffic better.
“It was supposed to have been done this past summer,” says Kovacs, “but it’s part [University of Illinois], part Urbana, so it’s a problem.”
The current phase of the project should be completed in about a week, but more construction will begin after that. It is unclear when that will be or how long it will take.
Kovacs said the construction should not affect Uni students that much, except they will need to cross on the east side of Mathews. However, students do need to be aware of what’s going on, and they need to plan a little extra time to get to school in the morning to avoid arriving late.
“It’s not an excused absence,” she says.
