CHAMPAIGN — Despite being short-handed, Uni's math team swept first place in all categories of today's Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics regional contest at Parkland College.
Not only that, but Uni tied for highest score in the state among schools in its division, 3AA.
According to results posted on the ICTM Web site, 19 regional contests were held throughout Illinois today. Sixty schools competed in 3AA.
Uni, the 3AA winner in Region 15, and Vernon Hills, the 3AA champion of Region 4, each scored 716 points, best in the division. (Nine schools competing in other divisions scored more than Uni, led by Naperville North's 892 points in 4AA.)
Although 3AA is for schools with enrollments between 1,000 and 1,999 students, Uni traditionally competes in that category in order to face tougher competition.
Uni now advances to the ICTM state finals, which will be held April 26 at the University of Illinois.
Last year Uni won the Region 15 title with 641 points. At the 2007 state finals the team placed sixth.
As team coach Craig Russell noted, several scheduling conflicts prevented many Uni math students from competing today. All but three seniors were away on a class trip to the Wisconsin Dells. Other conflicts included SAT testing, an indoor track meet at Charleston, an IHSA music contest at Villa Grove, and a poetry contest at the Champaign Public Library.
For those who were able to compete, the results were impressive indeed. Here is how Uni students fared. All results are for Region 15.
