Note to RSS users: Alex Zhai IMO story has been updated

To Gargoyle RSS users:

This note is to let you know that the recent news story about 2008 Uni alum Alex Zhai winning first place at the International Mathematical Olympiad has been significantly revised and updated.

The revised version can be found here. The story was originally published on Sunday, July 20. The update was completed on Thursday, July 24.

To those who aren't receiving the Gargoyle RSS feed, sign up now! It's easy. Just set up an RSS reader (we recommend Google Reader) and click the RSS icon that can be found above in the URL bar of your browser or below at the bottom of this page or the bottom of our home page. Copy the RSS address into your reader, and you're in business! The OG comes to you every time we publish a new article or update notice.

Kudos to Alex!

And thanks for the RSS plug (LOVE that Common Craft video, and all their others).
Question: wouldn't I have seen the updated article in my feed anyway? No matter - it's worth the extra shout out to Alex!

Question: wouldn't I have seen the updated article in my feed anyway?

I don't think so. An update to an existing OG article doesn't show up as a new and separate RSS item — at least not in my experience. I hope there's a way to change that. One of my goals for 2008-09 is to beef up our RSS feeds and proselytize on behalf of them. I've become an RSS addict. I don't how people who spend time online can live without an RSS reader.

RSS updates

Question: wouldn't I have seen the updated article in my feed anyway?

Clarification: Your RSS link to the original Alex article will send you to the updated version if you click it again. But you would never have known, via RSS, that the article had been updated unless we had sent you a separate update notice.

In other words, if you rely solely on RSS feeds for OG content, you'll be unaware of updates to existing articles unless we send notices written specifically for RSS users (which is something we had not done until now). I hope that makes sense.

What I said above is based on my own experience with OG RSS feeds. Please let me know — Frances and all other RSS users — if your experience has been different. And please add Frances' blog to your feeds! Uni is lucky to have a librarian who is not only an expert in information science but a fine wordsmith as well.
