Welcome, Guest!

Cheers & Jeers: November '07 edition

THEY ARE BACK, and they’re as hot as before. For those youngins’ and Uni newcomers who aren't familiar with the time-old tradition, Cheers & Jeers is a delightful little place where the Gargoyle editors can exercise their wit and charm.

The “Cheers” section is full of happiness, rainbows, sunshine, butterflies, and laughter. It's where we can reflect on and thank our lucky beans for the things that make Uni amazing.

The “Jeers” is a good-humored, gentle look at the oh-so-few things that are wrong with this school. (And, yes, over the years we've jeered ourselves.)

CHEERS

ICE SKATING PARTY
With fewer people than ever showing up to Uni dances, we need a change. Thus, it’s refreshing to see StudCo and the junior class trying its hand at a new type of school function. Saturday's ice skating party sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

THANKSGIVING BREAK
Thanksgiving is by far one of the best holidays, and we can all agree that we really need this break. Four-and-a-half cheers for a four-and-a-half-day weekend.

BABIES!!!
In the few short months since the school year began, Ruby Majerus Mitchell and Nicoli Antonio Micele have entered the world and are doing well. Congratulations to the new parents!

ALEX ZHAI
We would be remiss if we didn't single out one of our fellow editors, who finished seventh in the world's toughest math contest! Click here for more about Uni's own math prodigy, who helped the U.S. team finish fifth overall last summer in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

FALL PLAY
For the first time in several years, Uni theater performed a tragedy. The comedies were great, but we needed a change of pace. As usual, the cast, crew, and director were superb.

ALL-DISTRICT MUSICIANS
With 16 people chosen for all-district, it makes us wonder how many more great musicians Uni could possibly get.

FALL ATHLETES
From the girls cross country team placing ninth at state to boys soccer going to the sectional title game, not to mention Michelle Mehnert's third-place finish at state and Jake Seeley's selection to The News-Gazette's all-area first team, it seems Uni athletes just can't fail these days.

UNI HIGH BASKETBALL
For all the smack talk and the back and forth between the boys and the girls teams, both are gearing up for really good seasons. With a lot of seniors, returning talent, and varsity experience, get ready for UHBB and UHGB magic.

CULTURAL FAIR
Even though it’s been awhile, we still feel the need to give major props to the organizers of the Oct. 12 Cultural Fair. The event was really fun, really yummy, and nothing short of being baller. We think weekly lessons in capoeira and African tribal dancing are now necessary.

JEERS

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
All seniors will know what this is about. It’s getting down to crunch time, and applications are due soon (really soon if you are applying early decision), and it’s kind of scary, really dull, and altogether a pain in the butt.

YUCKY LOUNGE
Messy and hot, the lounge is officially not the place to be anymore. It smells bad, and for some reason people can’t seem to locate the disposal bin. Plus, we’re convinced the furniture is toxic.

ELEVATOR ETIQUETTE
Attention underclassmen *cough* subbies *cough*: The elevator is not a toy! Do NOT ride it up and down during your free period. When we were subbies we didn’t even ride the elevator. And seriously, what’s so fun about Uni’s elevator? It goes up and down at the blazing speed of one mile per hour.

FALL SPORTS AWARDS CEREMONY
We love the athletic department, but in general, there has got to be a better way to do these sports awards ceremonies. Fall athletes were in Uni Gym for more than two hours on Monday listening to the coaches talk. In truth, no one wants to hear about the teams, so we should hand out the awards, watch the video, and get the heck out of there.

SOFT LOCKDOWN
Honestly, if a terrorist or crazed student is planning a shooting spree at Central, Centennial, Urbana, or Mahomet, they are not going to come near Uni High. Sorry, it’s just not on their radar. The locked doors seemed excessive and inconvenient.

An obvious jeer...

I would have thought MRSA would have been a pretty obvious jeer...
