Cheers & Jeers: February '08 edition

Cheers & Jeers

Cheers

  • Agora Days ’08

Every year Uni students look forward to Agora Days. A three-day weekend and no “real” school for a week — what more can we say?

  • Too cool for school

Uni’s two snow days last year were the first since 1999. But school closing because of cold weather? Simply unheard of! At any rate, lots of students jumped up and down the night of Jan. 23, screaming, once they heard the lovely prerecorded message announcing that school was off. The second snow day, on Feb. 1 (this time actually for snow!), was a great sequel.

  • We’ve got spirit, yes we do; we’ve got spirit, how ’bout you?

Spirit week! Student Council came up with very creative dress-up days, including “Dress Ugly Day” and “Dress Like an Animal Day.” Furthermore, the activities, especially the dance-off on the second-floor stairwell, proved to be fun and exciting.

  • Writers strike is over

With the Writers Guild of America strike finally over we’ll have a completely unimpeded Oscars night, and there won’t be so many crappy reality shows on TV anymore. Hallelujah!

  • Lively lock-in

UFU has once again pulled off a successful lock-in! Highlights included a “Guitar Hero” showdown, scrumptious pie to dine on, and a hallway dance. The only downer was the fact that many students got ill with the flu. But, hey, at least we got sick for a good cause!

  • Ragin’ Cajun fun

S4BW’s Ragin’ Cajun Dinner on Friday night was a hit! The food was extremely delicious, and the money goes to a good cause. However, the highlight of the evening was the smooth jazz music provided by Uni students Ethan Berl, Clement Dossin, Grant Loos, and Miguel Zamora-Mills.

  • Musical skillz

All-state musicians Ethan Berl, Daniel Borup, Jennifer Roloff, and Lucy Zhang represented Uni at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference in Peoria. Congratulations, and good job displaying Uni’s musical talent!

Jeers

  • Weather ... inside Uni

With 30-degree temperature swings throughout the building, 210-degree hot water leaks from the ceiling, and wind coming through poorly sealed windows, Uni may soon need to hire a meteorologist to predict what the weather will be like inside the school.

  • Suffering from senioritis

Senioritis has struck the seniors hard this year — and some underclassmen as well. Come on guys! Just a couple more months to go. Don’t give up now!

  • Macabre MRSA

We thought senioritis was bad enough, but now MRSA? Recent reports of MRSA, a bad form of staph infection, found in the locker rooms at Kenney Gym make the list of things seriously wrong with the building one item longer. Just make sure to wash your hands and use that disinfectant gel.

  • “Hannah Montana” highway robbery

Going to see the “Hannah Montana” movie for $15? Right. Ever since “High School Musical,” the Disney Channel seems to be taking over the world. But is it really worth it to double the regular ticket price to see a movie about a 15-year-old with dual identities? We think not …

  • Frustrating flu

Influenza has hit Uni hard, and the number of sick students was in the upper 40s at the start of last week. Coughing and high fever are not fun to deal with, especially during the festive Agora Week.

  • Graduation grumbles

The poor seniors were forced into a tiny room for nearly three hours Friday to “discuss” graduation plans. Many of the selections for things like speakers and processional/recessional songs were hastily chosen to get the meeting over with rather than for actual sentimental value. Not to mention that the sick people were coughing and infecting their peers.

Yeah, I second the graduation jeer

Yeah, I second the graduation jeer. I think the handful of folks who actually care about graduation shoud just form a committee and decide this stuff for everyone.
