Column: Things that make me sad
Published: Sunday, May 25, 2008 - 10:28pm
IT'S THE END of the year.
Summer is so close I can practically taste the sunscreen (which you should always wear, by the way), and that means a lot of excellent things, like frolicking in the sun, hanging out with friends, sleeping in, seeing movies, the fourth “Twilight” book ...
However, this year, the arrival of summer is made a little less sweet by several things, which I have decided to list for you.
Things that make me sad:
Gas Prices
I have a job this summer, and I will most likely be driving there myself, in my car. And as I will be making money at this job, I will have to use that money to pay for gas to run my car in order to get to work.
So yeah. Thank you, American government, for having the foreign oil thing under control. Prices have risen about a gazillion cents (or more like 70) in just the past few months, and it is making me want to cry.
Democrats
Pick a nominee (Barack Obama) already! Geez.
While I'm not extremely knowledgeable about politics, I am, as you may have noticed in other topics, extremely opinionated (Barack Obama), so I'm not going into a lot of detail on this one.
Graduation
EVERYONE IS LEAVING ME! Well, OK, not everyone, but a lot of people. Some of my best friends are seniors, and, the sad thing is, many of them are many months younger than me, but I have to stay here, sitting in school for eight hours every day, hating you.
No, I don't actually hate you, and I never will, but I am fairly jealous and wishing more than ever that I had gone to Uni a year earlier.
The Weather
Obviously, Weather Dude, you did not read Anna's letter, because it's late May, and we're getting early April weather. So stop messing around with us and just make it warm and happy for more than half a day at a time, please. I don't want to spend my summer wearing a rain coat and sitting inside. That's lame. I want to jump rope and play with my dog and play Ultimate Frisbee and have other fun summer adventures. And I want to not get wet and cold while I'm on those adventures.
Illness
I have been using a ridiculous number of tissues lately, and it's starting to get annoying. I keep hovering on the brink of sickness, but I never quite get there. So either I would like it all to go away, or I'd like to get it over with. Thank you very much.
Unfairness
My sister is going on a People to People trip to Greece, France, and Italy without me this summer. I am feeling extremely jealous, as I have never been to Greece. But, I get three weeks without my sister, so I suppose I'll be OK. She had better bring me something, though.
Memory Loss
This list was so much longer in my head when I wrote it earlier while I was making my bed, but now I have forgotten all the other things that are making me sad. How sad.
I hope you have enjoyed my list. I would have written a much more chipper "Things that make me happy" list, but that would be too long. Or too short, depending on what time of day it is. Maybe I will write it some other time.
Here is a preview: ice water, ChapStick, books, summer TV, money, having a job, Harry Potter, Facebook, my dog, sunshine, swimming pools ….
Goodbye, everybody, and have a wonderful summer!
