Coffee, Mountain Dew, and spray bottles

I think one of the most painful sensations is the feeling that you get when you force yourself to stay awake.

I would know; I experience this sensation during school almost every day. While falling asleep in class is nothing uncommon at Uni, it’s a phenomenon with significant consequences.

Column: Once upon a dream

Uni students love to talk about sleep, or the lack thereof. Count Maritza Mestre among them, but what she's really a fan of is dreaming. "After a day that’s too long, sometimes the only prospect I have to look forward to is finally sleeping the whole day away," she writes. "And not just sleeping and waking up to a new day, but dreaming of something else completely. Something that isn’t what you’re used to, but what your mind longs for."

The number of sleep-deprivation articles that have been recently written made me ask the question: Why do we yawn? Is it because we are feeling tired or really bored? And why is it that whenever you see someone open his or her mouth wide to yawn that you also feel the urge to yawn?

Yeah, well, my life is worse

"I'm tired. I didn't get ANY sleep last night." This is a common remark that you can hear in the hallways, the classrooms, on the phone, and any space that students occupy. Complaining seems to be the Olympic sport of high school, and people are constantly battling for the gold. Unfortunately, this contest isn't held once every four years, but every day and everywhere.

Feeling tired?
