Column: Obsessed with texting, and here's why

A year ago Elaine Gu didn't understand why people were into texting. Wouldn't a phone call be simpler? To satisfy her curiosity, she signed up for a basic texting plan. Now she gets it. Like AIM a decade ago, texting is yet another revolution in the way we communicate, and it's not going away anytime soon.

Obsessed with texting

These days, people are obsessed with text messaging.

Look down the street and you'll see people texting. Observe your classmates during class and you'll find somebody secretly texting behind a table. Take a peek into cars driving down the road and you'll see drivers texting.

I'll send you a picture … in 10 days

The old competition of who has a cell phone has been replaced by who has “the best” phone.

Everyone owning a cell phone has become the norm. If you walk up to a random person and ask to borrow their cell phone, chances are good that they have one. “Hey, what’s up?” is probably the most common phrase in my vocabulary, as well as my standard greeting when answering my phone.
