URBANA — Senior Michael Belmont scored both of Uni's goals in the final 10 minutes of play as the Illineks upset Champaign Central 2-1 today at DCR fields.
The win, the Illineks' first victory over the Class AA Maroons, lifted Uni to a best-ever record of 12-0. Central is now 11-3-1. Its only other losses were to fellow Big 12 Conference members Urbana (1-0 Monday) and Normal Community (2-0 Sept. 12).
The Maroons took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but junior goalkeeper Mike Renner shut them down in the second half.
Belmont continued his torrid scoring pace by netting his 18th goal of the season with 9:33 left in the game. He scored the game winner with 3:27 remaining.
The Illineks put significant pressure on Central in the second half and had far more scoring opportunities than in recent years. Central defeated Uni 6-0 last season and 1-0 in 2004.
