Boys soccer: Uni wins game shortened by lightning

URBANA — The Illineks raised their record to 5-2-1 today with a victory over Sullivan, even though weather conditions limited the game to just one 40-minute half.

This morning's nonconference game was suspended at halftime because of lightning. Play was originally supposed to be resumed after 30 minutes, but the continued presence of lightning within a 5-mile radius forced the second half to be canceled.

The game will count as a win for the host Illineks, who led 2-0 when the contest was halted. A game officially counts in the record boooks if one full half is played.

Junior Carter Hutchens scored first for the Illineks 23 minutes, 25 seconds into the game. Set up by an assist from senior Jake Seeley, Hutchens launched a shot that rose above the Sullivan goalkeepers' reach. It was Hutchens' first goal of the season.

Sophomore Dan Lilly added another score with 4:09 left, his third of the year. Seeley also assisted on that play, giving him a team-high 4 assists on the year.

Uni dominated possession throughout much of the half and forced most of the action into the visitors' side of the field. The shutout was goalkeeper Isaac Radnitzer's third straight. The senior has given up just 8 goals in as many games, with 4 shutouts.

Today marked Uni's third consecutive win after suffering 2 shutout losses.

"When we controlled the tempo we were in control of the game," Anders said.

Sullivan played a physical style, with Seeley in particular receiving some rough treatment.

"They were issued a card at one point," Anders said of the visitors, "and there probably should have been another."

But overall, Anders said, he was pleased with how his players held their ground and showed confidence in themselves.

Up next for Uni: The team will visit Oakwood on Tuesday for a nonconference rematch. The teams began the season on Aug. 25 with a 5-1 Illinek victory in the Uni High Soccer Shoot Out tournament.
