BROADLANDS — Uni lost for only the second time this season as Salt Fork defeated the Illineks 71-64 Friday morning in the Hayden's Classic holiday tourney at Heritage High School.
Salt Fork (a co-op team from Jamaica and Catlin high schools) took control of the game with a 26-point second quarter and held on for the win.
Senior Mike Renner led Uni with 19 points, including a 3-pointer. Joining him in double figures were seniors Frankie McFarland (15), Isaac Radnitzer (14), and Chumar Williams (10).
The Storm finished the first two days of the tournament with a 4-0 record to win the Heritage side of the bracket. In the victory over Uni, Salt Fork's Bryn Eakle scored a game-high 26 points, with 16 coming after halftime.
The Illineks came back strong in their second game of the day, beating Atwood-Hammond 59-42. Uni trailed at halftime 27-25. But the Illineks outscored the Rajahs 18-8 in the third quarter and 16-7 in the final period to pull away for a 17-point win. Renner's 26 points (including 3 treys) led all scorers.
Uni, now 9-2 overall, finished second in the Heritage bracket with a 3-1 record. The Illineks will face Fisher (11-4), the second-place team from the Bismarck-Henning bracket, in the tourney's third-place game 6 p.m. today at Bismarck.
Salt Fork will play Bismarck-Henning (11-1) for the championship at 7:30 p.m.
