URBANA — Behind senior Ruthie Welch's season-high 23 points, the Illineks defeated Normal Calvary Baptist 70-54 Friday night in Uni's final game of the regular season.

Welch and six other classmates celebrated Senior Night before the conference match got under way. Welch was joined by Marika Iyer, Angie Jin, Samantha Nguyen, Sarah Pfander, Karen Woodley, and Aran Yoo as their parents escorted them to center court to the applause of the Kenney Gym crowd.

Uni finishes the regular season 12-12 overall and 9-3 in the East Central Illinois Conference. This is the second year in a row the Illineks have gone 12-12 before the playoffs. The team has posted a 10-4 record since starting the season 2-8.

Last season, Uni finished 8-4 in the ECIC to place third behind Normal Calvary (9-3) and champion Decatur Lutheran (12-0). This year Uni will finish no worse than second behind the defending champs.

Against the visiting Crusaders (now 10-10, 5-6), Uni sported an all-senior lineup throughout the first quarter as Woodley got off to a spectacular start, scoring 10 points in the first 3 minutes, 54 seconds.

Welch added 7 points; along with a basket each by Yoo and Pfander, the Illineks ended the first period with a 21-6 lead.

But the Crusaders didn't let the 15-point deficit deter them. They scored 10 points in the first 1:54 of the second quarter to cut Uni's lead to 21-16. It wasn't until Pfander scored on a layup with 5:10 left before halftime that the Illineks got on the board again.

Normal Calvary's Emily Borst gave the visitors a 28-27 lead with 1:51 to go in the half. They took the lead again at 30-29 with 1:27 remaining. But junior Rachel Skoza countered with a jumper 37 seconds later, giving Uni the lead for good.

In the third period, Uni outscored the Crusaders 16-7 to pull away for what ended up as a 16-point victory. Head coach Rebecca Murphy played 15 Illineks during the contest, including Nguyen, who saw her first action since reinjuring her knee earlier this season.

The only bad news to come out of the game was an injury to Woodley. After racking up 10 points and 8 rebounds, the senior post player had to leave the contest late in the third quarter after turning her ankle. As of Friday night, her status for the playoffs was uncertain, according to Murphy.

On the night, Welch led Uni in both scoring and rebounding (9); she also had 3 assists.

Woodley was second in rebounds, followed by Skoza with 7 and Jin with 6, all of them important in allowing Uni to stay in control of the game.

Yoo (12) joined Welch and Woodley as the team's double-digit scorers. Pfander and junior Jessie Sullivan each netted 8 points; Skoza added 6.

Pfander led the team with 5 assists, and she recorded 3 steals. Yoo also had 3 steals and dished out 4 assists.

On Monday the Illineks will face Georgetown-Ridge Farm in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A playoffs. The game will begin 6 p.m at St. Thomas More High School in Champaign.

This is the first year that the IHSA has divided schools into four classes for girls basketball. A single class was used through 1979. The division of schools into small (Class A) and large (Class AA) lasted from 1980 to 2007.

Uni is seeded ninth in the 11-team Sub-Sectional B of the Bloomington Central Catholic bracket. Georgetown-Ridge Farm is seeded seventh.

The two teams played earlier this season when the Lady Buffs defeated Uni 51-29 at the McDonald's Comet Classic on Nov. 20.

If the Illineks pull off the upset, they would play second-seeded Monticello on Thursday. That game would begin at 6 p.m., also at regional host St. Thomas More.
