DECATUR — The Uni offense finally caught fire Thursday as the Illineks scored five goals in 15 minutes in a 6-0 conference victory over Decatur Christian.
For the third time in as many games, Uni dominated the action early on but had troubling finding the net. Thursday's contest was still scoreless late in the first half when Michelle Wong was awarded a penalty kick. The sophomore beat Decatur Christian goalkeeper Candace Lehman with a well-placed shot to give Uni a 1-0 lead.
That's where things stood at halftime. But when play resumed, the game changed quickly.
Senior Suran Yoo scored her first goal of the season less than a minute into the second half — the 41st minute of the game — on an assist by junior Joy Shapley.
Yoo's goal unleashed Uni's biggest scoring barrage of the season. Shapley made it 3-0 in the 43rd minute, assisted by Wong. Sophomore Erika Belmont then scored a pair of goals, one in the 46th minute (Shapley assist) and the other in the 51st minute (Yoo assist).

PHIL ANDERS
Head coach Phil Anders discusses his team's conference win over Decatur Christian, which raised Uni's record to 6-1-1, 2-0.

The scoring ended four minutes later when senior Sarah Pfander, playing midfielder after starting the game at goalkeeper, scored off an assist by senior Beth Peregrine.
Head coach Phil Anders then began substituting liberally, playing a large number of JV players in the final 30 minutes.
Junior Sheri Grill wasn't tested much in goal in the first half as Pfander's replacement. In the second half, junior Lor Sligar took over as keeper.
Sligar preserved Uni's third straight shutout by making several pointblank saves late in the game, including a tremendous save on a Decatur Christian penalty kick in the 71st minute.
With the win, Uni's record improves to 6-1-1 overall, 2-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference. Decatur Christian falls to 1-6-1, 0-3.
Today's victory was the Illineks' third straight shutout win. Uni outshot the Warriors 33-2, including a remarkable 19-0 in the first half.
In other news, the IHSA came out Thursday with seedings for the Class A sectionals. Uni, assigned to the 10-team Williamsville bracket, is seeded No. 4.
Seeded ahead of the Illineks are Decatur Lutheran (third), Warrensburg-Latham (second), and Williamsville (first). Uni is scheduled to play two of those teams later in the regular season: Warrensburg-Latham (May 1) and Decatur Lutheran (May 5).
The girls will travel to Macon Meridian on Saturday to make up a game rained out on April 10.
