WARRENSBURG — In recent years, the Uni boys soccer team has become very familiar with Warrensburg-Latham, but not in an especially good way.
Two years ago, the Illineks lost to the Cardinals in the Class A sectional finals, which ended Uni's bid for state.
Last year the boys fell again to Warrensburg-Latham, losing a regular-season contest despite keeping the game scoreless for 65 minutes, allowing two late goals to the Cardinals. That victory was part of Warrensburg-Latham's 30-game regular-season undefeated streak.
But on Monday in nonconference action, the Illineks got even — literally — with the Cardinals, tying them 3-3 on a last-minute goal by junior Dan Lilly.
The draw brings the varsity record to 7-5-1 overall, while the team's East Central Illinois Conference record remains 3-0.
Warrensburg scored an early goal in the 11th minute, but senior Stephen Prochaska responded with a goal of his own from an assist by freshman Brandon Lin. The score would remain even at 1-1 for the remainder of the first half.
In the 45th minute, junior Neil Pearson scored his first goal of the season, following a deflected free kick from Lilly to find the back of the net. However, the host team responded with two more goals of their own in the 52nd and 78th minutes.
Down 3-2 with only 2 minutes left, Uni appeared to have lost to the Cardinals yet again. However, the area’s leading scorer was not about to let that happen.
Lilly scored in the 80th minute off a direct kick by senior Holden Bucher, tying the game. Lilly now has 18 goals for the season in 13 contests.
Despite the even score, Uni outshot Warrensburg-Latham 15-9. Junior goalkeeper Nile Hamer recorded seven saves.
The JV squad also tied the Cardinals, with both teams going scoreless. The JV is 2-3-2 overall, 0-1 in the ECIC.
The varsity team will be back in action Thursday when they visit Iroquois West.
