Girls volleyball: Illineks lose to Oakwood in home opener

URBANA — The Uni girls lost to Oakwood in two games tonight at Kenny Gym.

The Comets won 25-16, 25-19 to spoil the Illineks' home opener, two nights after Uni defeated Atwood-Hammond in a road match.

With the nonconference defeat, the Illineks are 1-1, 0-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

"Senior Annie Machesky had a great night on defense," commented Uni head coach Amanda Palla. "She led the team with nine digs, and consistently got her hands on the hits of Oakwood's top middle hitter."

Senior Rachel Skoza led the Illineks in kills with seven, and junior Tuli Bera led the team with four service aces. Senior Jessi Sullivan finished with four kills and five digs."

Last year Uni fell to Oakwood 25-18, 25-16.

In JV play, Uni lost in three games: 15-25, 25-20, 5-15. Uni's JV record is 0-2 0-0.

The Illineks return to action on Saturday when they compete in the all-day Eagle Classic tournament at DeLand-Weldon.
