Basketball awards: Yoo, Renner, Williams win varsity MVP honors

In the annual basketball awards ceremony held Monday at Uni Gym, seniors Aran Yoo, Mike Renner, and Chumar Williams came away with varsity MVP awards. Other honors included all-conference selections for Renner (unanimous), Williams, Yoo, and junior Rachel Skoza.

Basketball update: Williams advances in 3-point contest, Sullivan's run ends at state prelims

Senior Chumar Williams has made it past the second round of the IHSA Class 2A Three-Point Showdown. He is hoping to duplicate on the boys side the accomplishment of junior Jessi Sullivan, who advanced to the girls Class 2A state prelims this year. Her run ended Thursday, when she made five treys at Illinois State University's Redbird Arena.

Girls basketball: Sullivan makes it back to state in 3-point competition

For the second straight year, Jessi Sullivan has made it to the state prelims as one of the top shooters in the IHSA Three-Point Showdown. Sullivan, a junior, finished in the top four of Thursday's competition at Bloomington Central Catholic. Eight players competed in the showdown; only the top four would advance to next week's state prelims.

Girls basketball: Sullivan, Nguyen one step away from advancing to state in 3-point contest

Senior Samantha Nguyen and junior Jessi Sullivan are one round away from qualifying for state in the IHSA Class 2A Three-Point Showdown. Last year Sullivan made it to the state prelims, becoming the first Uni player to advance that far since Rebecca Murphy took over as head coach in 1994. Sullivan and Nguyen must finish in the top four Thursday night at Bloomington Central Catholic to advance.

Girls basketball: Season ends with first-round playoff loss

[UPDATED with audio and photos] The Illineks finished their season Wednesday night with a 50-38 loss to Georgetown-Ridge Farm in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A regionals. Junior Jessi Sullivan led Uni with 11 points. Classmate Rachel Skoza added 8 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. With the loss, the Illineks end up 12-13 overall, 9-3 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

Girls basketball: Lady Lions too much for Illineks

Decatur Lutheran's 21-point halftime lead proved too much to overcome as Uni fell to the Lady Lions 66-40. At the time, Uni's record fell to 9-11 overall, and 6-2 in the ECIC. Rachel Skoza led the Illineks with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Uni recently ended their regular season 12-12 overall, and 9-3 in the conference. They play Georgetown-Ridge Farm tomorrow in the first round of the playoffs.

My freshman year, I had to drink this nasty microwaved concoction of soy sauce, apple juice, pepper, Al Johnson's snot, and god knows what else in order to be "initiated" onto UHGB varsity. I definitely threw up in my mouth a little.

Weather update: Girls basketball playoff game postponed due to fog, will be played Wednesday

The first-round IHSA Class 2A playoff game between Uni High and Georgetown-Ridge Farm was postponed tonight due to heavy fog. The contest was scheduled for a 6 p.m. tipoff at St. Thomas More, the regional host site. The game has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Champaign school.

Girls basketball: Judah edges Uni 42-33

Despite 18 points from senior Karen Woodley, Uni fell to Judah Christian on the road 42-33. Junior Rachel Skoza added a double-double -- 10 points and 10 rebounds -- but no other Illinek scored more than two points. At the time, Uni's record fell to 9-12 overall, 6-3 in the ECIC, but the Illineks have since rebounded with three consecutive wins going into tonight's playoff matchup.

Girls basketball: Seniors win final home game, team reaches .500 as regular season ends

[UPDATED with photos] Behind senior Ruthie Welch's season-high 23 points, the Illineks defeated Normal Calvary Baptist 70-54 in Uni's final game of the regular season. Uni is now 12-12 overall and 9-3 in the East Central Illinois Conference. The team will face Georgetown-Ridge Farm in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs 6 p.m. Monday at St. Thomas More High School in Champaign.

Weather update: Three basketball games to be played today at Kenney

There may have been no school today because of the snowstorm that swept through the Midwest, but conditions have improved enough to allow Uni and Normal Calvary Baptist Academy to play three basketball games later today at Kenney Gym. The boys JV game will begin at 5, followed by the girls varsity at 6:20 and boys varsity at 7:45. Senior Night ceremonies for the girls will be held before their game.

Weather update: Senior Night girls basketball game postponed

Tonight's varsity girls basketball game between Uni High and Normal Calvary Baptist Academy has been canceled. Weather permitting, Uni will play Normal Calvary Baptist in three games Friday at Kenney Gym: boys JV at 5 p.m., girls varsity at 6:20 (Senior Night ceremonies prior to start), and boys varsity at 8.

Girls basketball: Illineks beat Decatur Christian, approach .500 as season winds down

Uni edged to within one game of .500 Monday night with a 61-45 victory over host Decatur Christian. The conference win raises the Illineks' record to 11-12 overall, 8-3 in the East Central Illinois Conference. The team has just one game left before the Class 2A playoffs begin next week: Thursday's Senior Night contest against Normal Calvary Baptist at Kenney Gym.

Girls basketball: Skoza's double-double leads Uni to win over BCL

Junior Rachel Skoza finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks — all team highs — en route to a 48-30 Uni victory Friday night over conference foe Buckley Christ Lutheran. The Illineks improve to 10-12 overall and 7-3 in the East Central Illinois Conference.
